Literally so to speak!
Today’s write up is inspired by this week being dedicated to The BackCare Awareness Week 2013 especially for carers. In the borough of Barnet, we have a large elderly population without doubt. My next-door neighbour is now in her 90’s.
As an Acupuncturist and Massage Therapist, I see carers on a daily basis. It is no surprise to have a role reversal where the once children are now the parents. Not only it is an added mental responsibility but also a very physically challenging one too. But carers need care too.
One clinic where help is greatly appreciated is Friend in Need. A Friend to lend a helpful hand; a hand of touch and care for carers. I have been working with carers for the past 10 years. It is their time, their much appreciated space and most importantly they also need to take time to look after themselves.
As a therapist, it is most fulfilling to help in any little way. The massage is greatly valued and loved and from my end, it is a satisfying job to do. It is great to see the stress melt away and breathing more regulated and calm. I can’t take the problem away but giving time, support, treatment and a kind word can make a world of difference.
A Friend in Need is a friend indeed! Here are a few words some of the Carers say:-
“I feel I am away from my troubles if only for a little while”
“I feel refreshed and rejuvenated to go back home and carry on!”
“My shoulders are so much better and feel I can push the wheelchair much easily now”.
“The needles have lifted a weight off my shoulders!”
It is a great feeling to help in a very little way, and I hope to continue doing so.
