Women's Reproductive Health, Supported Through Acupuncture & Tui Na

Monica Daswani has a wealth of experience helping women to treat complaints regarding their fertility and reproductive health.

Female Conditions

As a Holistic Chinese Medicine practitioner, we treat the whole person, although there are specific female conditions seen in clinic.
From the onset of puberty to menopause, women experience a variety of ailments that acupuncture can help with. It is common to see young girls during puberty who may have delayed, irregular or painful periods, so we work on their hormonal levels. I get results with women by taking a detailed history and working with your body to balance and achieve a healthy female reproductive cycle.

Acupuncture is known to help to balance and regulate the menstrual cycle which in turn helps boost fertility and the opportunity to fall pregnant.

Depending on what complaints the body needs help with, a few sessions of Acupuncture coupled with dietary, exercise, and lifestyle advice, go a long way to balance the body to support falling pregnant. Many ladies find the treatment relaxing and rejuvenating, as we treat you holistically to reach positive outcomes.

There are several issues or imbalances women can experience during their menstrual cycle. Some common symptoms experienced during the menstrual cycle and seen in-clinic are pain, irritability, depression, bloating, breast distension, headaches, heighten emotions, or crying to name a few.
Dysmenorrhea or painful periods can be associated with symptoms of pain, emotional upsets, lower back pain, insomnia, and low-grade fever and can also be due to a pathological cause like a cyst or pelvic infection.
Pre-Menstrual tension (PMS or PMT) is another common condition where women experience mild to severe pain that can change on a day-to-day level. It is often a blend of small lifestyle changes (diet and activity levels) along with acupuncture to help balance hormone levels that can alleviate these symptoms.
Amenorrhoea is the absence of periods. There are several causes ranging from physiological changes (pregnancy, breastfeeding, menopause), certain drugs, specific diseases (PCOS), travel, sudden weight loss, emotional changes, and physical trauma.

If you experience any of these symptoms or conditions, book an appointment to see how acupuncture and a holistic approach to your wellness can help you.

PCOS – Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Polycystic ovary syndrome is an increasingly common condition, where multiple fluid-filled cysts grow on and around the ovaries. This can prevent ovulation and make the menstrual cycle irregular, and is a common cause of infertility. Associated symptoms include excessive hair growth, weight gain and acne.

Chinese medicine is known to effectively treat this condition by tackling both the symptoms and the underlying cause. Severe polycystic ovary syndrome is a difficult and stubborn condition to treat, and it may take up to six months of treatment before good progress is made. Dietary and lifestyle factors also play an important role in the treatment of this condition.

Infertility

Infertility is defined as the inability to produce offspring in a woman who has been trying with a normal sexual life. Identifying the reason for not being able to fall pregnant is key after a detailed case taking in the first session. Acupuncture along with other lifestyle suggestions have found to be quite beneficial in most cases.

Our Services

Endometriosis

Endometriosis is when cells like the ones in the lining of the uterus are found elsewhere in the body, resulting in pain, swelling and often painful periods, spotting, dark menstrual blood, and clotting. Acupuncture aids the treatment of endometriosis, which will improve the menstrual cycle, alleviate pain, and increase chances of conceiving.

Fibroids

Fibroids are the most common structural abnormality of the uterus and may form in the endometrium of the uterus or protrude into the uterine cavity.

They can be completely asymptomatic however in some women they may cause:

  • Bleeding between periods
  • Constipation
  • Pelvic pain
  • Recurrent bladder infections

Fibroids and polyps can also interfere with fertility and conception as they affect the development of the endometrial lining, making embryo implantation difficult.

In Chinese medicine, fibroids are viewed as stagnated blood that is not moving freely. Acupuncture points are used to move to blood and increase the circulation in the area. Herbs may be recommended along with acupuncture.

Menopause

Menopause indicates the complete or permanent cessation of menstruation. This occurs during a period of declining ovarian function which usually around 2-5 years. This is a normal physiological transition and a woman may go through without any symptoms. However, in some cases the symptoms may be quite severe and they can range from headaches, tiredness, lethargy, irritability, anxiety, nervousness, depression, insomnia, hot flushes, vaginal dryness and sweating. In Chinese medicine, we treat the underlying cause as well as the presented symptoms.
