I was recently asked, what made me want to do acupuncture and massage? I am specialised in five different types of massage. In order of training, therapeutic massage, tuina (Chinese massage), manual lymphatic massage (MLD), sports and remedial massage and most recent, myofascial release.
My entire family had acupuncture for aches and pains. Having experienced it myself, I knew how it worked first hand. It was a fairly easy decision to make. It had helped us all and I know it works!
Whilst training for acupuncture, I felt I needed to feel the muscle groups whilst treating musculoskeletal conditions, and enrolled for a summer Therapeutic Massage course. I have not looked back since. It helped me not only understand the physical body better but also the benefits of touch. How soothing and relaxing it can be and by releasing emotions from the physical body. Whilst practicing pre-qualification, it highlighted the importance and incredibly reassuring and calming quality of touch.
For instance, a lady came specifically for relaxation. The massage techniques not only helped with the physical wellbeing, but also an emotional slowing down of restless and aggravated thoughts. Some open up during a session, which can be helpful to be “heard”. This is all part of healing the ‘self’.
Already a qualified acupuncturist, I was keen to further enhance the massage skills I know had by learning more about Tuina Chinese massage. It helped to work again in a holistic way, finding the balance by treating the physical.
MLD (manual lymphatic drainage), was another tool that was added to the tool box along with sports and remedial massage and myofascial release.
Every patient is different. My approach is holistic; different treatments for individual people; people who may all come for backache or headache, but a different approach towards restoring health, balance and equilibrium. Understanding each person by conducting a detailed case history helps me to establish an effective treatment plan.
It is great to tap into other areas as well, nutrition, lifestyle, exercise to be able to give a holistic treatment.
